Aluminium Gates

Eco-Friendly • Low Maintenance • 15 Year Guarantee • Finance Available

We are custom gates specialists ensuring the highest quality of materials and craftsmanship at every stage of your project, see for yourself below the process from start to finish.

For the assembly extrusions are sent direct from the mill. On arrival the aluminium goes through a 7-stage dipping process to clean, etch and polymer seal the extrusions both inside and out. This gives protection against the elements and forms the base for the perfect powder coating process.

After this the extrusions are then dried and sent through powder coating nozzles, once coated the extrusions then pass through 24m oven to achieve the finish that is guaranteed to keep colour to within 2 pan-tones over 15 years for all architectural finishes. (structura).

Each gate is manufactured to your exact requirements, on receipt of your site survey our team will produce and approval drawing to your required design and sizes.

Once approved, your design is then sent to our manufacturing workshop where your gate will be fabricated using a uniquely designed aluminium profile.

Extrusions

For all our products we use structural grade 6063 aluminium which is extruded using our own unique dies.

Treatment

On arrival the aluminium goes through a 7-stage dipping process to clean, etch and polymer seal the extrusion both inside and out. This gives protection against the elements and forms the base for the perfect powder coating process.

Coating

After this the extrusions are then dried and sent through our automated powder coating plant. Once coated the extrusions then pass through our 24m oven to achieve the finish that will keep the colour to within 2 pan-tones over 15 years for all architectural finishes (structura).

Woodgrain

Once coated a selection of the extrusions then go on to be wood grained using the sublimation process. This produces over 20 woodgrain variations which are all UV stable adding to many years of maintenance free colour retention.

Assembly

The next stage is to assemble the gates using a screw and cold-weld epoxy adhesive process like that of the prestige car market. The automation strengthening and corners are all reinforced and bonded at the same time. The cold-weld corners have over 180kg/cm2 (2600lbs per square inch) of holding power (stronger than traditionally welded gates). The curing time to full strength is 2-3 days.

Quality

During all stages of the production, sample pieces are used to test each batch and process to ensure our high level of quality is adhered to. At Yorkshire Gates we closely follow the procedures set by Qualicoat the globally recognised standard for architectural aluminium coatings.

The advantage of following this process is the ability to coat the product fully inside and out which gives a superior product that is stronger and retains its looks for many years after other finishes have failed.

Woodgrain Effects

Yorkshire Gates Standard Woodgrains:
It is possible to have a mixture of these and solid colours within the same gate. We have a number of other non-standard woodgrains which include Zebrano, Chestnut and Hickory. These are available by request.

Plank Sizes and Layouts

Classic style or contemporary flair. Yorkshire Gates range of planks are versatile and beautiful. Made from the highest grade of aluminium allow, you can be assured of quality. The boards are the backbone of Yorkshire Gates system. Strong and durable, they are designed to last.

All plank profiles are 5650mm lengths available in plain profile and tongue and groove profiles and can span up to 1800mm without support. Yorkshire Gates recommends you seek engineering advice in high wind or high traffic areas and refer to the Certified Fence Installation Guide.

Standard layout of our plank profiles is horizontal or vertical in a single direction. To change direction or to change from close boarded to open slat within the same gate, we use a mullion in the vertical plane or a midrail if horizontal (if the planks swap from close boarded to open but remain in the same direction a midrail or mullion is then optional).

Extra cost is added to use a midrail or mullion (see price list).
Open slat design is the same pricing as close boarded, for open slat designs we can supply packers from 12mm to 90mm to fit in with the design layout you require.
Diagonal plank layout is also available for all or part of the design and is priced depending on the number of diagonal planks used.
As our profiles are assembled after coating, there is scope to add woodgrain and solid colours within the same gate.
This opens the possibilities to hundreds of bespoke designs.

Waterjet Cutting

For special motifs, we utilise our waterjet cutter.

To manufacture these motifs, we produce a program using AutoCAD or similar.
To save costs, we would prefer to have this supplied by the customers, the format easiest for us to work with is DXF or DWG.

Unless it is a unique design you want us to do for you, there are many files you can purchase online (eBay etc) just search DXF file. There are many sites, some are free such as:

www.cnccookbook.com/free-dxf-files
www.3axis.co/free-vectors/Buck
www.ironshadows.com/game1.htm
www.etsy.com/uk/market/dxf_files_for_cnc

Once the image is ready, we can upload to the waterjet cutter.
We use 6mm thick 6082 grade aluminium or stainless steel for surface bonded versions.

Cost varies due to the size and intricacy of the design and the amount of time on the water table.
Please call us to discuss.

Perspex® Panels

At Yorkshire Gates we only use the finest extruded acrylic (Perspex®).
This is stronger and has less imperfections than the lower cost acrylic.
The advantages of the cast acrylic are its strong dimensional stability, excellent optical clarity and has high resistance to weathering including that from direct sunlight.
It’s excellent rigidity and high strength allow us to use in many of our gate designs.

Frosted Perspex® can have overlaid vinyl lettering in any colour and font, this is included in the option price.

Clear Perspex® can have the frosting overlaid leaving the design or wording as clear, this is also included in the option price.

Maximum size of Perspex® panels per single leaf 2000mm x 350mm or 1800mm x 400mm, other sizes on application and will be dependent on gate design due to overall gate strength.

Size Recommendations

Please be aware gate sizes are design and location specific.

Wind loading should be considered. Be mindful when specifying aluminium gates as with all gates these are also site specific. Please take into consideration factors such as wind tunneling around coastal or open regions.

Windy locations can blow large sliding gates off the guide rails when manoeuvring so generally the longer the gate, the lower height is recommended, also O-Groove wheels have greater resistance to wind loading than V-Groove wheels.

Ground track slider fully boarded is 7.5mm clear opening with a height of around 1.65m, dropping down to a 4.5m opening for gate heights of 2m. Openings over 5.2m requires us to join our gates due to the available profile lengths (cost option).
Ground track open slat-designs have a maximum opening width of 5.2m at a height of 1.8m (50mm less in length for full woodgrain).
Cantilever is 5.2m clear opening at around 1.8m high. Open-slat or close boarded as these have stronger frame, 50mm less for full woodgrain gates. Over 1.8m high it is recommended to have a 2nd support (either post or wall tie bracket).

Farm gates swing maximum leaf size 4m.
Farm gates ground track slider 5.2m opening 50mm less for woodgrain.
Farm gate cantilever 5.2m opening with an overall height of 13-1500mm.

Swing gates can go up to 2.2m in height per single leaf at around 2.5m wide (close boarded).
Swing gates at 1.6m high can achieve around 3.2m per leaf (close boarded).
Open-slat versions offer less rigidity.
Swing gates around 1.8m high in the open-slat design with spacers can achieve around 2.4m each leaf.
Pedestrian gates up to 3 square metres total area.
Double pedestrian gates max area 4.4 square metres.
Anything over this size then we build as standard swing gates.

These dimensions are a guide for preparing quotations, please consult Yorkshire Gates for further information or advice on quoting over these sizes.

A small selection of other possible designs.

Once coated a selection of the extrusions then go on to be wood grained using the sublimation process. This produces up to colour 30 variations which also get the 15-year guarantee.

The process to produce the gates then heads to be cut to length with an accuracy of 0.1 mm. Once cut to length the profiles are then CNC machined for all the fixing points and any options ordered.

The next stage is to assemble the gates using a screw and cold-weld polyurethane adhesive process like that of the prestige car market. The automation strengthening and corners are all reinforced and bonded at the same time. The cold-weld corners have over 180kg/cm2 (2600 lbs per square inch) of holding power, stronger than traditional welded gates. The curing time to full strength is 2-3 days.

The advantages of this process are the exceptional strength of the finished gate and the ability to coat the product fully inside and out which gives a superior and more durable paint finish over other processes.
